Birth*1806Jacob B. Wagner was born in 1806 at Salisbury, Elk Lick Twp., Somerset County, Pennsylvania.1
Note*1806He William WAGNER, of Elk Lick is a grandson of William WAGNER, who for Meny years followed his trade, which was that of a saddler. About 1800 he came from Adams County to Salisbury, where he passed the remainder of his life. He was the father of the following children: Jacob, mentioned at length hereinafter, Elijah; Peter; Baltzer; Henry; Philip; Charolette; Sarah; and Julia A.

Jacob WAGNER, son of William WAGNER, was a stonemason bt trade. He married Mary, daughter of Jacob DE HAVEN, of Elk Lick township and their children are: Malvina, wife of Abraham GREENAWALT; Alfred, married Phoebe MCFADDEN; Cathrine, wife of Herman FERNER; Elizabeth. wife of Edward RICHTER; Peter; William, mentioned at length hereinafter; Joseph. married ______ Wright; Charlotte, wife of John MCCLAVEY; Harriet, wife of John Ringler; Lock, married Christina MATHENY; and Jasper NEWTON.

William WAGNER, son of Jacob and Mary (DEHAVEN) WAGNER was born on July 3, 1840 on the old farm in Elk Lick Township, and received but few advantages of education, attending the public schools only about two weeks in each term until the age of 15. He was about 13 when his father died, and from that time was obliged to aid in the support of the family by working on farms as a day laborer. In 1861, he enlisted in Company A, Tenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserves, and nine months later he was discharged on account of physical disability. On his return home he learned the cooper's trade at Wymer's Grove and followed that calling until 1874, after which he was variously employed until 1877, when he went to West Virgina and there engaged in farming. At the end of a year he returned to his native county and for four years led the life of farmer in Greenville Township. He then bought a farm on which he has since made his home. He has served one term as supervisor, and is a Republican and a member of the Reformed Church of Salisbury.

Mr. WAGNER married, December 28, 1876, Elizabeth, daughter of Henry RIMBOLD, of Greenville Township, and the following children were born to them: Joseph; Alice; Marie; Jacob; Albert; and Martha. The mother of the family died September 10, 1889, and Mr. WAGNER subsequently married Eliza, daughter of John Thompson of Lavansville, the issue of this marriage being one child, John T. WAGNER.

Battle of Philippi
After the commencement of hostilities at Fort Sumter in April 1861, Maj. Gen McClellan planned a Virginia offensive into northwestern counties (which now comprise West Virginia) which he hoped would lead to a campaign against Richmond, Virginia (the seat of the Confederacy). His immediate objectives were to occupy the territory to protect the largely pro-Union populace in the counties along the Ohio River, and to keep open the B & O railway line.
Col. Kelley (under Gen. Morris) devised a two-prong attack against the Confederate force in Philippi.upon his arrival in Grafton on June 1. His 1600 men first entered the village of Thornton and marched south on a back road on the same side of the river as Philippi. Meanwhile, the 7th Indiana under Col. Dumont, the 6th Indiana under Col. Crittenden and the 14th Ohio under Col. Steedman came together in Webster which lies 3.5 miles south of Grafton to execute a double envelopment of the Confederates by converging on Philippi.
The Confederate volunteers received a surprise attack by these forces as they slumbered in the morning. This forced the soldiers to retreat to Huttonsville. Although this was a relatively small and bloodless battle it was considered the first major land action in the eastern theater of the Civil War. Following the battle, Col. Porterfield was replaced in command of Confederate forces in western Virginia by Brig. Gen. Robert S. Garnett. The companies of Confederate recruits who had been at Philippi became part of various regiments, including the 9th Virginia Infantry Battalion, the 25th Virginia Infantry, 31st Virginia Infantry, 11th Virginia Infantry and the 14th Virginia Infantry.

*****************************
The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought from December 11-15, 1862, was one of the largest and deadliest of the Civil War. It featured the first major opposed river crossing in American military history. Union and Confederate troops fought in the streets of Fredericksburg, the Civil War’s first urban combat. And with nearly 200,000 combatants, no other Civil War battle featured a larger concentration of soldiers.
Union Gen. Burnside’s plan included holding the Confederate First Corps in position at Marye’s Heights. The Union army’s main assault against Stonewall Jackson produced initial success and held the promise of destroying the Confederate right, but lack of reinforcements and Jackson’s powerful counterattack stymied the effort. Both sides suffered heavy losses (totaling 9,000 in killed, wounded and missing) with no real change in the strategic situation.
