Marriage*before 1610 John Goodale married Elizabeth Parlett before 1610 at Norfolk, England; John had 9 children by this marrige.1
Death*7 July 1625 John Goodale died on 7 July 1625 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.1
Name Variation1563  As of 1563, John Goodale was also known as Goodall.1
Note*1613 He John Goodale or Goodall, a wealthy chandler, lived at Great Yarmouth, the famous port of the herring fishery in county Norfolk, from about 1613 until his death in 1625. His earlier life had been spent in the small market town of Downham, sometimes called Downham Market, still in Norfolk, but in the far western end of the county and a few miles south of King's Lynn.
Although it is not yet fully proven, he was probably a son of Thomas Goodale, "the elder," and a nephew of Richard Goodale, a tallow chandler of Downham Market who made a will dated 12 July 1587, proved 3 October 1588. Richard Goodale, after directing that he be buried in the churchyard at Downham and making a bequest to the poor of the parish, left 40s apiece to four boys who were not yet 21 years old: Robert Goodale son of Thomas Goodale the elder; Richard Goodale son of John Goodale, and Thomas and William Goodale, sons of Thomas Goodale the younger. To John Goodale, son of Thomas Goodale the elder, he left a messuage, bought from Richard Danbye, in Downham Market upon condition that he pay to Richard Goodale the L9 bequeathed to him by John Goodale his father. He named John Goodale, "my nephew," his residuary legatee and executor. Witnesses: Fraunces Parlett, William Lyffe, William Parlett (Norwich Consistory Court).
From his will, Richard Goodale seems to have been an old bachelor or a childless widower, and presumably all five of the boys were his nephews. As John Goodale mentioned in his own will in 1625 a brother Robert and a cousin Richard, the identification seems fairly certain, and we can presume still further that John had been his uncle's apprentice and later his partner in the chandlery business.
The will of John Goodall of Great Yarmouth, chandler, is dated 25 June 1625, proved 24 September 1625 by Elizabeth Goodall, executrix, with power reserved to John Goodall, the son, executor.
The will reads: "To the poor of Yarmouth 40s To the poor of Downham 40s To Richard Goodall, my eldest son by my first wife, if now living, L6 a year for life, on condition that if I die before I have surrendered my copyholds he shall do all necessary acts, otherwise this legacy to be void; also he is not to part with the said annuity. In default of payment he is to have power to distrain on my lands at Ormesby and Scroutby until it is paid. Further I give him L10 when he is 35 years of age. to daughter Rebecca L4 a year on the same conditions, and L10 at 35 years of age, if alive, or before if my executors please, or at her marriage if with the consent of her mother. To my now wife Elizabeth all my houses and lands in Norfolk, Lincolnshire or elsewhere, free and copyhold, until the children I had by her attain the age of 21, she to keep the premises in good repair and educate and maintain the children. To Peter Taylor, my wife's son, L20 at 22 years of age. To Susan Taylor, sister of the said Peter, L20 at 22 years of age. To John Goodall, my eldest son by this wife, at 21 years of age, all lands, houses, fish-houses etc. at Yarmouth and lands etc. in Ormesby, Scroutby, Potter Heigham or near thereto, provided that when he has them he shall pay his brother Richad and his sister Rebecca their yearly portions. To Christopher Goodall, my son, lands and houses in Downham Market, Denver, Bexwell and Wimbotsham at 21 years of age, and also L20. To Joseph Goodall, my son, all lands and houses in Wybberton, Boston and Frampton in Lincolnshire at 21 years of age, and also L20. To Mordechaus Goodall, my youngest son, the houses and lands of Edward Atfen in Runham and Philbie which are mortgaged to Mordechaus on condition of payment of certain money to him, if the said Edward makes forfeiture of them, and also L100 at 21 years of age. If Atfen shall redeem the said lands then my executors are to take the money and make it up to L200 and put it out at 7% for the benefit of my child Mordechaus till he attains the age of 21, then the L200 to be paid to him. To Elizabeth Goodall, my daughter L100 at 21 years of age or at marriage, if to the liking of her mother and her brother John. To Marie Goodall, my youngest daughter, L100 at 21 years of age or at marriage, and when she is 12 the money is to be put out at 6% for her use until she is 21. If either daughter die, the survivor is to be her heir. If my son John die under age and without issue, then all given to him is to go to his brother Christopher, and gifts to Christopher to go to Joseph, and gifts to Joseph to go to Mordechaus and gifts to Mordechaus to be equally divided between the brothers, my children by this wife. If Christopher die under age, then Joseph is to have his lands, gifts to Joseph are to go to Mordechaus and gifts to Mordechaus are to go to the former brothers then living. To William her husband, L10. To John Marston, his son, at 21, if his mother be not living, L20; if she be living to be paid a year after her death, if he be 21. To Marye Maston, at 21 after her mother's decease, L10. To Elizabeth Maston, another of her daughters, at 18, if her mother is not alive, L10. If any of these daughters die, her legacy is to go to the survivor. If my wife remarry before my son John is 21, she is to give bond for L1000 for these payments. To my friend Thomas Williams of Norwich, tailor, 40s and to his wife a gold ring worth 10s at least. To Clement Eade's wife of Monslye, 10s. To Richard Goodall my son's two children, 40s each at 21. To Edward Atfen of Runham, 20s. To John Moneby of Downham, my old sevant, 40s. Residue to my wife Elizabeth and my son John, and they to be my executors. My well-regarded friend and loving kisnman William Parlett senior of Downham Market, draper, to be supervisor, and I give him my best gown and my best gold ring or L5. Marriage*22 October 1622 Richard Goodale married Dorothy Whiterent on 22 October 1622 at Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts
Death*16 September 1666 Richard Goodale died on 16 September 1666 at Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 72.2,1
Note*1625 He When John Goodale made his will in 1625, Richard was presumably not in England as his father did not know whether or not he was living, and, all the other legatees being named with care, it would seem that he did not know the names of Richard's two children. Richard was back in Yarmouth, county Norfolk, England in 1637 when he and his step-mother were defendants in a Chancery suit.
By 1638 a Richard Goodale had settled in Newbury, where the Toppans were living, and where Mrs. Elizabeth Goodale arrived, so far as we know, at about the same time. He brought with him a wife, Dorothy, and two children. He was granted planting ground at Newbury on 19 June 1638. Again in April 1639 the town granted 'To Richard Goodale a foure acre planting lott on the neck on the point.
Goodale, or Goodell, as he wrote the name, soon left Newbury to become one of the first settlers of Salisbury, and received land there in the first division. Salisbury was settled in 1639; the date of the first division is not given.
The list of original settlers of Salisbury MA shows #59 "Rich: Goodale". Richard Goodale (or Goodell) of Salisbury, "planter" and "turner," received land in the first division in 1639, and again in 1643. He is said to have been a famous hunter.
On 3 February 1650/1651, Goodale was on a list of those accepted as townsmen and commoners. He was taxed 14s there on a rate made 25 December 1650 to raise L30 "for Mr. Woster" -- the Rev. Mr. William Worcester, the first minister of Salisbury.
He served on the grand jury at the County Court in 1652 and 1654. He was on the tax list of 18 July 1652, and was one of the signers of an agreement between the inhabitants of the old town and the new town on 1 May 1654. In 1654 he shared in a division of land by the town. On 19 May 1658 he signed a petition about church matters. He received land in 1654.
When the town bought Mr. Hall's farm, Richard Goodale paid L1:3s:1p in 1657 toward that purchase, and owned lot number ten. Richard Goodale Sr. of Salisbury, describing himself as a turner, sold ten acres of upland to Cornelius Conner for L5 on 1 April 1663. On 14 Apr 1664, calling himself a husbandman, he bought a 12 acre planting lot from John Ilsley. Goodale's son-in-law William Allin deeded Ilsley a four acre lot on the same day, and half of the 12 acre lot was assigned him by Goodale in exchange.
Wife Dorothy died 27 January 1664/1665 at Salisbury. Richard did not long survive her. He lived with his son-in-law William Allen for over four months before his death, and in the inventory of his estate was a recod of 10s a week due Allen from May 3rd to Sept 16th, for Goodale's "dyet and attendanc."
He died in September or October 1666. His will is dated 7 June, codicil 8 September, proved 9 October 1666. He left half his estate to his son Richard Goodell of Boston, and half to his daughter "Ann wife to William Allen of the towne of salisbury." He mentioned his "goods housings Lands orchards pastures meadoe ether marsh or upland and all my other Land both plow Land or any other Land and all my Catell with the rest of my goods." To his "granddaughter hubburd" he left one cow. Cornelus Coner, formerly his servant, was to have all his wearing apparell, "both Lining and wooling" -- Cornelus was about 21 at the time of Goodale's death. Goodale named "Loving bretherin" (possibly a church relationship) "edward french and Philip Challis, and Richad wels" as overseers and his son as executor. Inventory taken 4 October 1666 shows over 90 acres of land worth L197; three calves, five cows, 4 swine worth L28; 1/8 share in a bark, L20. The estate was divided by Richard Goodale and William Allen on 4 December 1666. in 1625.
